Pop Evil headlined a show at the Jewel last Tuesday along with Red Sun Rising, Carolina Burns, and Leaving Eden. This is the third show that I’ve shot at the Jewel, and the venue was pretty packed for a Tuesday night. Like the other shows that I’ve photographed here, the four band schedule packs quite a bit of music into a night.
Locally based band Leaving Eden opened up with a pretty tight set. Their top tracks on Spotify are covers, due to the fact that most listeners will search for a song and just play whatever pops up. Some of them are pretty good. Lead “Eve”, for example, does a pretty good job on Iron Maiden’s The Trooper. However, the only cover I remember hearing from their set on Tuesday was Sweet Child of Mine. The rest were originals, which is a good thing. For example, check out Back 2 Boston off 2014’s Welcome to My World album.
Carolina Burn was up next. They’ve got a hard rock sound, but the name is a little misleading. They are southern rock like Shinedown is southern rock.. just a little bit. They’ve got a couple of good tracks up on YouTube, so that you can see for yourself.
Red Sun Rising, up next, is touring in support of their new album Polyester Zeal. The clear breakout hit on that album is a track called The Other Side. The track has over 2 million streams on Spotify. That’s friggin huge. Check out the above link. The people that keep playing it are right, it’s a great song.
Finally, Pop Evil took the stage. I’ve loved these guys for a long time. The just keep coming out with solid album after solid album. Based on the amount of radio play time they get, I’m not the only one that thinks so. Even in the amazingly dark lighting at the Jewel, it was fun photographing these guys. Check out the photos of Josh Marunde standing up and wailing on the drums, taken of course during Last Man Standing. In addition to Pop Evil favorities like Boss’ Daugther, Ways to Get High, and Take It All, they played an interesting cover of Tom Petty’s Won’t Back Down. Encores included Trenches and Footsteps.
The Jewel put of a jam packed night of great music last Tuesday. I’m glad I was there.
