Versatility can be a hard word to epitomize. The band Filter has hit it again with a new cd “The Sun Comes Out Tonight” and it pretty much has the word written all over it. This cd has something for everyone, from their debut “Short Bus” in 95 to the present they have given the word versatility new meaning. This twelve track compilation is interesting to say the least. From hard riffs and heavy synthesized tones to meaningful lyrics, this cd gives a variety of tunes to the listener that they can relate too in one way or another. Filter has changed it up a bit, from very early projects to the present they have re-energized the industrial rock category from day one, successfully combing the two.
It is a safe assumption to classify Filter as realists. Their lyrics are truthful and thought provoking in many ways. The first track “We Hate It When You Get What You Want” speaks volumes and captures the essence that is Filter. It pulls you in and puts the hammer down throughout this track.
“What Do You Say” comes out of the gate with ferocity and they interpret issues with society in every word they present. They make a statement in all their songs and they don’t hold back for anyone. Many will have a different perspective on the meaning behind it, but more so than not many will get the message Filter conveys.
Track six “This Fingers For You” challenges the demise of a reputation from secrets, lies and manipulation. The lyrics are well presented and strike a chord with everyone that has experienced a situation like this with rebellious conviction.
Their ability to effectively make you contemplate societal and political issues is more evident in the track “Self Inflicted”. They methodically make one think about every word they produce. The band seems to objectively create awareness opposed to forcing a particular opinion.
Most artists attempt a ballad for the most part and some without any success at all. “It’s My Time” is beautifully composed and can be interpreted as either being born or leaving this earth and it is comforting. Finding peace seems to be the understanding of this song. The lyrics are wonderfully enlightening.
Filter has become a band that you either dislike or love. Their strong and to the point messages are taken to the highest ground and could be thought of in various ways. They have taken what they know and streamlined it into something fabulous. “The Sun Comes Out Tonight” is definitely worth listening to for the experience alone.
