How’s this for an LA story: traffic. Rihanna won the evening’s first award (for Hip-Hop/R&B Song of the Year for “Pour It Up”), but presenter Pitbull had to accept for her – because she was stuck in traffic on the 405. When she got to the Shrine Auditorium, she got people talking with her unique hair and makeup, and ended up being the night’s biggest winner.
Usher channeled the spirit of Michael Jackson as he led an incredible choreographed routing to Michael Jackson’s new single, “Love Never Felt So Good.” Clear Channel stations around the country will premiere the full version of the single, which features Justin Timberlake, tomorrow morning.
Kendrick Lamar was featured talking about how he saw 2Pac and Dr. Dre film the video for “California Love” – and then proceeded to cover the 1996 hit surrounded by his fans.
Pharrell Williams brought the house down with a set that included new song “Come Get It Bae,” “Blurred Lines,” “Get Lucky” and “Happy” before Gwen Stefani presented him with the iHeartRadio Innovator Award.
The Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan bromance continued. Blake cheekily introduced Luke’s performance by calling him a pain the ass and then proceeded to beat out Luke’s “My Kind of Night” for Country Song of the Year with “Boys Round Here”
Miley Cyrus won Best Lyrics for “Wrecking Ball,” but her dad Billy Ray took it home for her. His speech included several shout outs to the late great country storyteller George Jones.
Pitbull was on a boat – in the middle of the Shrine Auditorium. He performed “Wild Wild Love” (with G.R.L.) and “Timber” on the audacious yacht set. “Timber,” his Ke$ha project, took home Best Collaboration.
The Mahomies were out in force to catapult Austin Mahone to iHeartRadio Instagram Award victory. Considering that Rihanna has been on an Instagram spree this week, tagging all of her posts with the method-of-entry hashtag #iHeartRihanna, this is a very impressive achievement.
