Def Leppard, the iconic rock band known for their electrifying performances and classic hits, has debuted a brand-new single titled “Just Like 73,” featuring legendary guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave fame. The single is available for streaming today, and a limited-edition 7” vinyl release is set for August 2, 2024. Fans can pre-order the vinyl through the band’s direct-to-consumer store or find it in black at all major retailers.
The collaboration marks a significant moment for both Def Leppard and Morello. The song channels the spirit of the 70s with a robust stadium-size beat, thick riffing, and a signature chant, “Rock with me, just like 73!” Morello’s distinctive guitar work and a powerful gang vocal add to the track’s nostalgic yet fresh appeal.
Joe Elliott, Def Leppard’s frontman, described the song as encapsulating a pivotal era for the band. “It encapsulates a time that burned deep into our DNA. We wanted to celebrate that very important and glorious time,” he said. Guitarist Phil Collen added, “Our song ‘Just Like 73’ represents that awakening,” reflecting on the transformative influence of seeing David Bowie in the early 70s.
Tom Morello expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “I had a blast rocking a solo on ‘Just Like 73.’ I played ‘Rock Of Ages’ in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand new tune that’s one of their best.”
An animated music video for “Just Like 73,” featuring the band and Morello, is set to premiere on June 20, 2024, at 16:00 BST.
In addition to the new single, Def Leppard is gearing up for a massive summer stadium tour. The tour, co-headlined with Journey, will feature special guests Heart, Cheap Trick, and Steve Miller Band on select dates. The tour kicks off on July 6 in St. Louis, MO, and will make its way to Boston’s Fenway Park on August 5, 2024.
Earlier this year, Def Leppard celebrated the 40th anniversary of their iconic album Pyromania with a Deluxe Expanded Edition, which includes unreleased demos, live shows, and a Blu Ray with an Atmos mix of the album. The anniversary edition has been lauded by critics, with Classic Rock awarding it a rare “5-out-of-5 stars” and Guitar World calling it “a masterpiece.”
With over 110 million albums sold worldwide and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Def Leppard continues to be a driving force in rock music. Their recent projects and upcoming tour promise to deliver the high-energy performances and classic hits that have made them legends.
