Grammy Award-winning guitarist and Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes is offering fans an intimate look at his recent work with “The Whisper Sessions,” a nine-track digital album set for release September 12 on Fantasy Records.
The collection features stripped-down versions of songs from Haynes’ 2024 solo album “Million Voices Whisper,” which debuted at number one on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart last November. The latest single, “From Here On Out,” exemplifies the project’s approach — taking the uptempo original and revealing its vulnerable core through sparse arrangements that highlight Haynes’ vocals and guitar work.
“‘From Here On Out’ was composed during the COVID-19 lockdown, capturing the shared emotional landscape of that period,” Haynes explained in a statement. The song reflects both nostalgia for “the carefree-ness of younger years” while addressing themes of community and transformation during a pivotal historical moment.
The digital-only release includes collaborations with Derek Trucks, Haynes’ former Allman Brothers Band colleague who appears on three tracks. Among these is “Real Real Love,” which incorporates lyrics initially penned by the late Gregg Allman, and a rendition of the Allman Brothers classic “Melissa.”
Haynes has built his career on musical versatility, moving seamlessly between his roles in Gov’t Mule, his acclaimed solo work, and previous stints with the Allman Brothers Band and the Dead. His ability to cross-pollinate genres while maintaining his distinctive guitar style has earned him recognition as one of the most formidable musicians of his generation.
The timing of “The Whisper Sessions” coincides with Gov’t Mule’s upcoming “Back In The Saddle Tour,” marking the band’s 30th anniversary. The tour launches August 27 in Milwaukee and includes a six-date co-headlining run with Tedeschi Trucks Band through September and October. The extensive tour represents the quartet’s first major road campaign since February 2024.
Beyond his recording and touring activities, Haynes continues his philanthropic work through the Christmas Jam, an annual charity concert in Asheville, North Carolina, that has raised nearly $3 million for Habitat for Humanity over its 32-year history.
“Million Voices Whisper” marked Haynes’ first solo album in nearly a decade, earning critical praise as potentially his finest work to date. The success of that release, combined with his recent Gibson signature guitar partnership, underscores Haynes’ enduring influence in American roots music.
For longtime followers of Haynes’ work, “The Whisper Sessions” promises to reveal new dimensions in familiar material, stripping away production elements to expose the songwriter’s craft in its most essential form.
