The Maine State Pier is the perfect venue for a Summer concert. There is something magical about enjoying a concert on the pier while basking in the sea breeze, and watching boats pass by as the sun goes down. The pier is in a fantastic location in Portsmouth only steps away from plenty of restaurants and shops.
The evening began with a performance from the Jason Spooner band duo. Normally appearing with a full band, this evening the audience was treated to Maine native Jason Spooner on guitar, vocals and harmonica, joined by upright bass player and vocalist Adam Frederick. They have a funky alternative vibe with country roots that is perfect for kicking back on a Summer evening. Spooner talked a lot about his love of spending time in Montana. Check out his song, “Big Fork” which he wrote about his favorite place to visit Another of Spooner’s songs which is great to get you in the Summer mood is “Fireflies“. The Jason Spooner Band plays mostly in southern Maine. Check out their website jasonspooner.com to find show dates for the Summer.
Seeing Kenny Rogers walk out on stage was like laying my eyes on an old friend. I grew up listening to his music. With over 120 hit singles he has penned and recorded songs that appeal to just about everyone. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and is a true legend. Rogers is now 77 years old and has decided to make this tour, The Gambler’s Last Deal, his final one. Rogers informed the audience that the reason he is retiring is so that he can spend more time with his wife and 11 year old twin boys.
The evening’s performance was all about nostalgia. Rogers sang many of his classics including, “Lucille”, “Lady”, and “The Gambler”. The audience sang along most of the night, happy to be able to sing along with Rogers himself. For much of the show Rogers was joined on stage by Linda Davis. Davis has a beautiful voice and she sang some solos as well as duets with Rogers. During the evening Rogers shared some interesting personal stories. He talked about all the great artists he has performed with over the years, and many images of his old friends and colleagues were shown on the big screen on the stage. He shared stories of his days as a national ranking tennis player, and his love of photography. I found it fascinating that he even spent time as a photographer, working alongside famed photographer Ansel Adams’ assistant. During the show Rogers took some time to honor our country’s veterans with some kind words of thanks, followed by singing, “Heroes”. The audience gave all the veterans a standing ovation.
Kenny Rogers ended the evening with his song, “Blaze of Glory”. He was given a standing ovation.
