The House of Blues Boston was near sold out for Grouplove’s Big Mess Tour as it passed through Bean Town last week. Tickets sold quickly in response the band’s solid reputation for delivering a killer performance. This was my first time seeing Grouplove live after years of following their music and I can’t say that I have a single complaint.
Opener MUNA was the perfect choice to set the tone for the evening, serving up a high energy performance as the venue filled with energetic fans. The LA based pop group delivered catchy tunes with an edgy 80’s feel and a powerful lyrical message.
Grouplove took the stage to a full and electric venue that was brimming with positive energy. The group is well known for their feel-good live shows and although they seemed to get off to a slow start in Boston, they certainly did not disappoint. After the first few songs Grouplove reached fan favorite ‘Tongue Tied’, and the performance swiftly went from a five to a ten as Grouplove finally seemed to flip the passion switch.
They delivered a perfect audio assault of upbeat indie anthems, and the audience enthusiastically moved and sang along, fully engrossed in the performance. Personally my favorite moment was a killer cover of Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’ that had the crowd going bananas. Members Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi effortlessly played off of each other throughout the set while constantly engaging the crowd. The show wrapped with a bang and two of my favorite tunes by the group ‘Ways To Go’ and ‘Colours’.
Grouplove absolutely lives up to their namesake exuding a palpable feeling of love, fun and positivity. As promised, they put on an extremely fun, energetic and well put together show and attracted a positive fan base of fun loving people that combined to form and incredible energy in the House of Blues.
