10,000 Maniacs put in a great performance at The Cabot in Beverly on Friday the 13th. Having listened to them since the mid 80’s when they had their first hits, it was great to see that their sound has remained the same. The concert was done in two sets. The first, as described by bassist Steve Gustafson, was “acoustish” and the second was “eclectic.”
Mary Ramsey was great on both lead vocals and violin (viola). Gustafson, Ramsey and the rest of the band played a mix of original and cover songs including What’s the Matter Here, These are the Days, Trouble Me, Because the Night, More Than This and Just Like Heaven. It was a fun addition that Gustafson shared some history behind the songs as the band played through the music of their 30+ years together. Although there was not much room for dancing, small groups found a way to get up and get into the music by the end of the evening drawing in others from the crowd. A very enjoyable evening and as with any band with that length of work, it brought back a lot of memories from when the songs first hit the charts. Definitely worth checking out when they return to the area.
