I was lucky enough to cover Charli XCX at Lupos Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI Tuesday night 6/2/15. Surprisingly there was no opening act, which was fine by me because it allowed us to get right into the good stuff.
Charli took the stage to a small but electric crowd. She looked the pop star part in a zebra print sequin mini skirt and of course her signature sunglasses at night. Bass, guitar and drums were all “womaned” by her silver sequin clad, all female band.
The pop punk princess couldn’t have chosen a better song to set the tone for the night. The man hating track “Sucker” got fans screaming along to the lyrics. Middle fingers flew through the air to a chorus of “F-You Sucker”s!
More punk than pop. Charli bounced around the stage. Energetically belting out one angst filled pop punk ballad after the next.
Charli didn’t disappoint as she fed the crowd a taste of her biggest co-hits such as Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It”. In addition, she proved to us that she can definitely hold her own and isn’t just a guest star on some of today’s hottest pop tracks. The room’s energy amplified as one after the other, her own hits fired up the crowd. Time after time, I caught the punk teen in myself singing along to songs like “Break the Rules” and “Doing It”. Charli wrapped up the night with arguably her most popular hit “Boom Clap” and left us all wanting more.
I left the venue pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed with the performance of one of my new favorite female pop stars.
