Everclear stopped by Big Night Live in Boston yesterday for a night of 90s alternative rock.
First up was Sponge. Opening with Wax Ecstatic, they had the crowd going in no time. The band was active on the stage and it was a joy to see them interacting with each other. I love in when a band enjoys themselves during their set. They closed the set with one of their most well known tracks, Plowed, which had the crowd singing along.
Next up was Local H, the drum / guitar duet. I’m pretty amazed at how these two guys can pull off such a big sound (Chevelle is another example of this). I wasn’t familiar with President Forever when they played it. Initially, I though it was a new protest song, not one from all the way back in 2004. That’s how relevant it is today. Another stand out was Bound for the Floor, which had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs.
Finally Everclear came out to close out the night. This is the second time that I’ve shot Everclear (or at least Art) and they did not disappoint. Art came out quote “wearing my own band’s hat, like an asshole” and tossed it to a member of the audience, only then donning his signature Fedora (?). Art was very engaging with the crowd, telling stories and joking around. There was a recurring bit where the broke in to some classic rock (AC/DC, Zeppelin) only to cut short as the crowd started to get into it. “Nah, we’re not going to do that, were doing 90s stuff!”
Someone took a fall during Strawberry, and Art had to stop the show for a bit. I’m not sure if they really took a dive, or were just trying to be funny given the lyrics. If the former, I hope they’re OK, if the latter, not funny dude.
They played a really long set, about 70% from Sparkle and Fade, due to the 30th year anniversary. However, they definitely also covered a bunch of their all time hits including Father of Mine, Wonderful, New Life, and closing with Santa Monica. The crowd sang along enthusiastically, especially to Wonderful.
It was a great night of music bringing me back to some of my favorite tunes from this period. I recommend you check out the tour. New Haven is tomorrow.
