Having seen Lisa Marie on her first tour, I knew I was in for something special when I was approved to shoot and review this show.
I had never been to this venue, nick named TCAN but upon arriving was pleasantly surprised. The building was an old fire station built in 1875 shortly after the civil war, A recent 2.5 million dollar renovation has turned the place into a really charming little venue. Acoustics were wonderful and lighting was quite nice. The only disappointing part was there was not enough space at the foot of the stage to shoot from, nor could I stand in the isle to shoot, so I was stuck shooting from the soundboard.
Lisa Marie is touring supporting her third release, Storm and Grace. This show was the third to last stop on that tour.
Seth Glier opened the show, the grammy nominated artist played a short but very enjoyable set. Seth is a great song writer and has written songs with many heavy weighs such as James Taylor, Mark Knopfler and Ani Defranco.
Before starting her sold out show, it was asked that the audience refrain from holding cell phones in the air, recording or taking photos of the show, it was said to be a “listening show.” Lisa also announced that she had been sick, and that at the prior nights gig she had no voice at all, apologizing for what tonight’s show might bring, but from the first song in you could tell she was going to shine, and shine she did. Playing many tracks from her latest release but making sure not to ignore the hits from her first two albums.
Highlights for me were the song Weary, from her new release, that she co-wrote with Jarvis Cocker (lead singer of the English band Pulp) and Lights Out from her To Whom it May Concern release.
Throughout the show Lisa had fun with her band and the audience, at one point answering a couple questions shouted out from her fans.
Her band were quite good and included her husband Michael Lockwood in the role of guitar player and band leader and Bigelf vocalist, Damon Fox on keyboard/piano.
She ended the set with the Tom Petty cover, Need to Know.Despite her cold Lisa vocals were right on, with the exception of a couple of notes, that were unattainable she sounded great.
Two side notes: 1, Two people came up to me and said, “She was married to Michael Jackson, you know.” Okay first off, Who doesn’t know that? And why should that define her, any more then the fact she is the offspring of Elvis and Pricilla? (which in my opinion is more impressive.) and 2, Before the show started I was pulled aside by, who I’m assuming was her tour manager, and was asked to only shoot the first three songs, which is typical these days, but the way I was asked was definitely the most politely I’ve ever been given that instruction and went something to the effect of this, “ Hey, I’m so and so, and I just wanted to touch base with you, So Lisa prefers that you only shoot the first three songs, and that you only shoot from these two places, the soundboard and off to the sides, also as she has been photographed her whole life, she prefers to be shot from a standing position and not looking up at her. Is that O.K.? Between him and the staff at the Tcan It was a really enjoyable show.
