I completely missed the boat when Modest Mouse played Providence back in April for Brown University’s spring weekend. You could say I pulled the ultimate fan fail when one of my favorite bands was playing in my own back yard. I had scrambled for tickets and called all the connections with no prevail. I missed the show and had tried to live vicariously through student blogs.
Me being the type to live and not always learn, I almost made the same mistake twice! When I heard Modest Mouse was coming to Boston I requested to cover… Taken. No problem I thought, I will just get tickets when it gets closer. Sold out! Kicking myself I thought I was going to miss the boat yet again. However to my ecstatic surprise I got the call the week before the show from my editor asking me to fill in and cover! Hallelujah and thank you to the poor soul that gave up that opportunity.
Before Modest Mouse took the stage at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion, the sound of bees… yes, bees… hummed loudly over the speakers and filled the tent. The loud buzzing washed over the crowd with an eerie and electric anticipation for the show to begin and the sold out venue buzzed along with the sound of the hive.
Isaac Brock took the stage with the rest of his posse to put on a spectacular show filled with my favorite indie rock, killer stage lighting and smoke. Isaac belted out a mix of older hits like “Float On” along with newer releases such as “Strangers to Ourselves” and “Lampshades on Fire”. He put on an animated show full of facial antics and guitar tricks as the other members of the band played behind a screen of smoke.
In response to the crowd’s cheers and chants… the band came back for not one, but two encore sets. Returning to the stage they fed us some of my favorites like “Spitting Venom” and “Wicked Campaign”. They closed out the show with an energetic performance of “The Good Times Are Killing Me”.
I along with the rest of the crowd left Boston with goose bumps, and you better believe I won’t be making the same mistake a third time. The next time Modest Mouse is in New England I will be the first in line.
