Pierce the Veil was in town headlining the World Tour sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink in Lowell Friday night. I entered apprehensive about the show as I had little familiarity with the band’s music, but left with a solid appreciation after what turned out to be a wildly entertaining evening.
The night opened with Mallory Knox, a five piece alternative rock band from Cambridge, UK who are fresh of the release of their sophomore album, Asymmetry, released in October. After great anticipation, PVRIS (pronounced Paris) took to the stage next and gave their hometown crowd a gutsy set as Lyndsey Gunnulfsen apologetically admitted that she was losing her voice early into the second song. Rounding out the opening acts was Sleeping with Sirens, a melodic blend of metal and emo influences with an infectious energy that came across with every song of their set.
Although the outside temperature was sub zero this Valentine’s eve, if you were in the Tsongas Center Arena you would have sworn it was mid-July as Pierce the Veil heated up the arena by bringing their San Diego heat to the crowd. The band maintained the energy through the entire set, encouraging the fans to sing along with each chorus, and they enthusiastically obliged. And finally, the evening highlight was an acoustic version of “I’m Low on Gas and You Need a Jacket” performed by Vic Fuentes and his adoring set of teenage fans.
