Rival Sons took the stage to an eager, excited crowd at a tiny tight venue in Portland, Maine. Each member of the band had their own unique style and a dapper physical appearance. Pristine, leather, and tight. Intimidating, yet intriguing. Lead vocalist Jay Buchanan was mesmerizing with his long sweaty hair falling back and forth against his face as he sang.
The sons opened with Electric Man, immediately grabbing the crowd by the throat and pulling them into Buchanan’s intense vocals. A force in the crowd that pushed everyone as close to the stage and to one another as possible. Everyone in the Asylum that night was buzzing off the Son’s stage energy.
They moved right along into playing more favorites; Secret and Pressure and Time. As they finished Keep on Swinging, the energy in the room shifted. Just as the crowd got hyped up, the unexpected happened. Michael Miley, drummer for the Rival Sons, declared he was too sick to finish their set. This led to a devastatingly disappointed crowd as the Sons promised, “Portland, we are sorry, sometimes you just get too sick. We will be back.” For those few songs Miley was able to hold it together, Rival Sons pleased all of their guests with their hard biker rock with a classic southern twist.
