On August 13, 2024, the Chevalier Theatre in Medford, MA, hosted a nostalgic night of 90s alternative rock as Toad the Wet Sprocket and Gin Blossoms co-headlined a show celebrating the 30th anniversary of Toad’s platinum-selling album “Dulcinea.” The historic venue, which has been a cultural landmark in Medford since its opening in 1939, provided the perfect backdrop for this journey through time.
The evening kicked off with Vertical Horizon, whose lead singer, Matt Scannell, hails from nearby Worcester. Scannell’s mother, a Medford native, was in attendance, adding a personal touch to the performance. The band celebrated the 25th anniversary of their album “Everything You Want,” treating the audience to hits like “We Are,” “You’re a God,” and the title track “Everything You Want.” They also surprised fans with a cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong.”
Between sets, Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms took a moment to announce a raffle supporting the Gary Sinise Foundation, adding a charitable element to the night’s festivities.
Toad the Wet Sprocket took the stage next, with barefoot lead singer Todd Nichols setting a laid-back tone for their set. The band’s performance was a testament to the enduring appeal of “Dulcinea,” which went platinum in 1994. They seamlessly blended tracks from the anniversary album with other fan favorites.
Highlights included the melancholic “Something’s Always Wrong” and the introspective “Windmills.” The band’s chemistry was evident, particularly during “All I Want,” when bassist Dean Dinning faced technical difficulties. The group rallied without him showcasing their adaptability and professionalism. This mishap was followed by a thrilling conclusion to “Nightingale Song” featuring a dueling drum solo, when Dean joined Carl Thompson behind the drum kit.
Another standout moment came during their performance of R.E.M.’s “Drive 8,” featuring guest appearances by Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms and Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon. This collaborative effort epitomized the camaraderie among the bands and the spirit of 90s alternative rock.
Gin Blossoms closed the night with a high-energy set that proved why they’ve endured for 37 years. Lead singer Robin Wilson’s engaging stage presence was on full display as he interacted with the crowd, even sharing tambourine duty with two lucky audience members, a thrill they were sure to remember for a long time.
The band’s setlist was a journey through their extensive catalog, featuring hits like “Follow You Down,” “Found Out About You,” and the ever-popular “Hey Jealousy.” They also treated fans to deeper cuts like “Lost Horizons” and “As Long as it Matters.”
A highlight of their performance was “Hands are Tied,” which included a guitar solo and what Wilson dubbed a “twin guitar attack,” showcasing the band’s musical prowess. The inclusion of The Plimsouls’ “A Million Miles Away” was a nod to their influences and a treat for longtime fans.
Throughout the evening, the spirit of the 90s was alive and well at the Chevalier Theatre. The venue, which has hosted countless memorable performances over its 85-year history, provided the perfect setting for this celebration of alternative rock.
As the final notes of the Gin Blossoms’ encore faded away, it was clear that both Toad the Wet Sprocket and the Gin Blossoms had not only honored their past but also demonstrated their continued relevance in the present. The Dulcinea 30th Anniversary show was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was a testament to the enduring power of great songwriting and passionate performance.
