The Barenaked Ladies played the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion last week to an enthusiastic and devoted crowd.
Going to a Barenaked Ladies concert is just fun. I go to some concerts to bang my head, some to feel moved, and some just to have fun. These guys are squarely in the latter group.
It’s not just the irreverent lyrics, exemplified by probably their most famous song, If I Had a Million Dollars, but their bantering on stage and interaction with the crowd. Case in point: at one point during the set, Ed came down to the front row to sing You Are So Beautiful to Me… to this guy (captured off the jumbotron). Watch out Ed, I think he’s into you.
They talked about how they ripped off a lyric from Duct Tape Heart from Wikipedia (it’s pretty easy to tell which one). They played a version of the Big Bang Theory for the creationists in the crowd. Three words: “God did it.” Of course, during the “I just made you say ‘underwear'” lyric in Pinch Me, we had a pair of panties fly up onto the stage. At one point, Ed came down from the stage just to give this woman a hug. Awww…
The night was full of cameos too. Opener Howard Jones came up on stage to join BNL for one of his most famous songs, No One Is to Blame. Ed waxed on about how crazy it was to actually be playing with one of his own idols. Berklee professor (and Lou Reed drummer) Tony Thunder Smith joined the guys up on stage for a few songs. “How’d we do Tony?” Silence.
These guys are great in concert. I had a really fun time, and you will too.
