Review by Ilya Mirman
With a career spanning more than 50 years, John Fogerty is hailed as one of the most influential musicians in rock history, known for creating the soundtrack of a generation. As co-founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival, the group’s chief musical architect, and as a solo artist, Fogerty’s works rank as some of the most influential in American music history. He has been named as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists, 100 Greatest Songwriters, and 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone. Earning induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame, he is also a New York Times best-selling author for his memoir, Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music.
Though a fan of John Fogerty for over 30 years, this week was the first time I saw him live. Needless to say, it was a treat! The iconic riffs, the familiar voice, the high energy performance – an amazing way to spend an evening.
Currently in the middle of a tour celebrating Fogerty’s 50 years performing at Woodstock, the show evoked the spirit and sounds of that era. If you jot down every CCR you’d want to hear, you’d probably be looking at something close to the evening’s setlist. Throw in some terrific covers (With a Little Help From My Friends; I Heard It Through The Grapevine; Give Peace a Chance; and of course a Hendrix-inspired rendition of Star-Spangled Banner), and you have a killer show, start to finish.
As someone who’s watched Fogerty’s concert DVDs, it was really cool to see drum legend Kenny Aronoff on drums. And it was a treat to see John’s two sons Shane and Tyler perform with him. The tour is currently crisscrossing across the U.S., and concludes with a 6-show residency in Vegas. Fans of classic rock will be hard-pressed to find a better way to spend an evening!
