Mayday Parade and The Maine hit Lupos Heartbreak Hotel in Providence as a stop on their co-headlining The American Lines Tour. The venue was tightly packed by the time I arrived with eager fans who were anxious for the show to begin.
The Maine took the stage first and from a dark foggy stage dove straight into a favorite of mine, ‘Into Your Arms’ as front man John O’Callaghan sang beautifully backed by both the band and the crowd singing along the lyrics. The mellow intimate energy that the band began with didn’t last for long, and rapidly and brilliantly escalated throughout the set. The band had the venue completely engaged from beginning to end and the charismatic charm of John had the crowd awed. By mid set they had everyone dancing along to ‘Am I Pretty’. The shows production was on point and only added to the incredible performance delivered by the group. Their set closed with The Maine’s most popular song, piano led ‘Another Night on Mars’. I felt the goosebumps rise as the sounds of the crowd almost drowned out the band as their chanting along to the chorus echoed throughout the venue. In my opinion The Maine stole the show that night and this moment should have been the closing for the show.
That being said, I couldn’t say that I was disappointed there was more music in store as the stage was set for Mayday Parade to perform.
Mayday Parade took the stage bathed in red lights and fog and opened with the erie and instrumental track ‘Look Up and See Infinity, Look Down and See Nothing’ from their latest album Black Lines. Throughout the set the reaction from the crowd proved that they had chosen the perfect setlist, with classics such as ‘Three Cheers for Five Years’ expertly mixed in with new songs like ‘Hollow’. Tearjerker ‘Terrible Things’ slowed things down a little as the group showed the extent and range of what they are capable of. The show wrapped with a two song encore ending with a Mayday Parade classic ‘Jersey’.
