Meet the band:
Marcus Mumford
Winston Marshall
Ben Lovett
Ted Dwane
Between the Billboard-topping second album Babel, an all-conquering Gentlemen Of The Road tour across America and now East Coast US tour, it’s hard to imagine Mumford & Sons will join Elton John at the 55th annual Grammy Awards to pay tribute to legendary drummer Levon Helm.
This show was the first stop on the tour and what a show! With a quick scan of the crowd it’s crazy to see it’s a sold out show at Boston TD Garden. In fact the show was a sellout with in minutes. Further substantiating Mumford’s globe-spanning success: the standing room is packed with fans of all ages eagerly awaiting the Band to hit the stage. It’s not long before the whole place is on there feet, stomping to ” Babel.” On stage, Marcus Mumford conducts the foursome with military precision, stamping time and jamming out on the guitar.
It’s a consummate performance and the musicianship is extraordinary, particularly the vocal harmonies on “White Blank Page” and others like there biggest hit “Little Lion Man” their first big hit. The song was pretty faithful to the recorded version, but, of course, doing it live gave the song an added energy boost. Its clear that even with all the success they have had. Mumford and Sons continue doing things their way when it comes to touring.
Mumford remains one extremely strong, elastic singer. His voice can easily fill a room, and he breathes a tremendous amount of emotion into a song while also often starting off soft strumming his acoustic guitar. Marcus is a down-to-earth front man and an unlikely rock star. The band is impressive and inspired as a unit. There is an intensity and passion in everything that they do on stage, which comes alongside their impeccable musicianship. Watching them perform, you can tell just how much these four friends love making music. I can only hope that they keep doing it for a long time coming.
