After being introduced to In This Moment through their “Blood” Video, I was immediately intrigued with what this band was doing. Part performance art part heavy rock/goth band – (and i’m trying not to pigeonhole ITM into a genre- their music grabs influences from middle eastern music to tribal to classic standards )-This band,In This Moment, doesn’t seem to fail to deliver!
Admittedly, I didn’t understand the band name at first. After seeing this band a few times, and reading deeper into the lyrics, it started to become clear. In This moment has captured what is going on In This Moment in the music world with their sound and presentation. Their hard hitting music combined with the just-as-dark as Marylin Manson imagery without the Transgender confusion.
Maria Brinks at the helm, is straightforward Sex-Rock goddess. She knows exactly what she’s doing and literally screams it in your face. And you LOVE it. The band, looking like a gang of post apocalyptic survivors, provide the perfect backdrop to Ms Brinks Queen/Leader Image, as she stands on her pile of skulls that becomes her podium/sopapbox/Throne. Chris Howorth and Randy Weitzel command the stage like a WWF Mad Max wrestling team, without the WWF cheesiness. Travis Johnson on bass looks like a futuristic biker bandit and Tom Hane with his wild man style really all fit so well together, as if this band stepped out of a comic book story.
On top of that, the experience, lyrics and music are exactly about that- living IN THIS MOMENT. I personally think Maria Brinks knows that this is just a “moment” in her life, and she is the master of her own social experiment, drawing energy and inspiration from her experiences affecting and controlling crowds the way she does. It was also amazing to see them at House of Blues , because i was able to get a balcony view and watch the interaction of the crowd with the show.Definitely one of the newer bands that is worth experiencing. Its great to see artist and audience connect on that level.
