Classic Rock at Its Best
America co-founder Gerry Beckley has been quoted as saying that their music is “not oldies but classic rock-and there is a difference”. Undoubtedly, the sold out crowd at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island agreed. Classic-timeless, definitive, memorable; yes, classic is an accurate mark.
Without fanfare or introduction, the band took their place on stage and as the lights illuminated, the familiar acoustics of “Tin Man” filled the room. As if in the presence of life-long cherished friends, melodic tranquility enveloped the room.
After “Tin Man” was a brief fast forward to the 80’s with “You Can Do Magic” followed by a chronological walk through time with memorable favorites like “Don’t Cross the River” and “Daisy Jane”.
Dewey Bunnell’s whimsical “Ventura Highway” is so incredibly evocative; it has an almost tangible effect in its composition. The video background of seaside images visually placed you there, yet simply listening to the laid back melody and lyrics had the same impact.
“Sandman” brought a standing ovation and “Sister Golden Hair” had most of the audience out of their seats and dancing in the aisles and in front of the stage. Yes, the love and appreciation for the artistic influences that shaped a decade lives. The sound of America epitomizes the span of the ‘70’s, and they harmoniously retold its story.
